Mooresville enters into $4.6 million contract for new body cameras, Tasers
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Mooresville Town board unanimously approved a $4.6 million contract Monday night that includes cameras, tasers and other technology for its police department.
The new contract with Axon Corporation is over a five-year period beginning in June 2025. The current, original contract was for $1.47 million and expires next May, but they had to request additions due to moving into a new headquarters and a growing force.
The nearly $5 million deal provides the department 130 of Axon's Officer Safety Plan: Version 10 (OSP) body cameras and Tasers covering current positions, plus eight additional OSP 10s per year.

MPD Assistant Chief Joe Cooke told commissioners that the department current uses OSP Model 7 and they "want to move forward with the new product."
The bundle package also provides virtual reality Taser training, digital evidence management and unlimited cloud storage; Cooke said the department has 75 terabytes of videos and growing.
"It's impossible to keep that much data on hand and get it transferred," he said.
Cooke noted how the technology has advanced through the years, and that the newest body cam's from Axon have a Facetime-like feature after the previous version added livestreaming.
The initial yearly cost for the new contract is $934,000, and the town gets a $111,000 credit from current agreement.
In addition to police equipment, Axon is a multinational company that also offers gear and services for fire departments and EMS.
