Moravia school district residents to vote on $175K land purchase
Residents of the Moravia Central School District will decide early next year whether it can buy a piece of property near its schools for purposes that would be determined later.
Moravia Superintendent John Birmingham told The Citizen a community vote will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, on a proposition for the district to spend $175,000 to buy the property at 52 S. Main St. The vote will take place in the north side foyer of Moravia Junior-Senior High School at 68 S. Main St., Moravia.
The district board of education authorized the vote at its meeting Wednesday night. According to the resolution , the money for the purchase would come from the district's general funds.
The building on the 8-acre property, formerly the Oldest House in Moravia Bed & Breakfast, would not be part of the purchase and would remain with the current property owners, Birmingham said.
According to Cayuga County property records, 52 S. Main St. is owned by Kevin and Amy Davis and its 2024 land assessment is $43,600.
If the district purchases the property, located directly between Moravia's elementary and junior-senior high schools, the school district's facilities committee would meet with district officials and the community to discuss possible ways to use it as part of a future capital project, Birmingham said. Parking, athletics and educational programming are among the possibilities.
"There's all kinds of ideas we've heard from our community over the years," he said. "We feel that it's a very valuable piece of property that opens up a lot of opportunities for future use."
