. Wyomissing’s defense has been tested plenty of times this season — most of the time by run-heavy offenses playing in L-L League Section 4 circles. But this week, well, the Spartans will be tested by an air-happy, 1-loss Danville squad, which features pinpoint-passer QB Madden Patrick and his merry band of wideouts. ... Patrick’s numbers through 13 games: 166-of-255 for 3,067 yards, with 46 TD tosses against just six picks. He has a fun-bunch trio of wideouts at his disposal: Aaron Johnson (55-1,390, 25.3 avg., 27 TD catches — which ties the PIAA single-season record for TD snags), Carter Raup (45-698, 15.5 avg., 4 TD) and Cole Duffy (31-447, 14.4 avg., 6 TD) can all go up and get it, and beat you deep. ... Danville is averaging 389 yards and 43 points a game, and the Ironmen are riding an 8-game winning streak, including a 40-7 romp over Loyalsock in the D4 title game. ... If Danville sticks it on the ground, RB Bo Sheptock (1,304 rushing yards, 8.3 avg., 18 TD) has been a reliable runner. ... OK, now some good news for Wyo: Spartans own the top-ranked defense in the L-L League, giving up just 178 yards a game. And Wyo has yielded just 714 passing yards — fewest in the league. ... Can the Ironmen poke holes in the Spartans’ secondary, and make some big plays down the field? There’s your crux for Friday’s 3A state quarterfinal clash.

Harrisburg needs to do what nobody else has been able to do this season on Friday, when the Cougars make a return trip to Neffsville to tangle with unbeaten Manheim Township in the D3-6A finale: Get some pressure on Blue Streaks’ QB Hayden Johnson , and make him throw under duress, with plenty of hands in his face. ... Three Harrisburg D-line backfield-crashers to watch Friday: Ryan Epps (74 tackles, 24 TFL, 12 sacks, 9 QB hurries), Kevin Brown (51 tackles, 21 TFL, 10.5 sacks, 7 QB hurries) and Jyrell Britton (66 tackles, 15 TFL, 7 sacks, 5 QB hurries) are heat-seeking missiles for the Cougars, who have tallied 69 TFL, 15 sacks and 40 QB hurries, with an opportunistic 27 takeaways. ... We’ll remind you now that Johnson has thrown for 2,738 yards with 47 TD tosses against no picks this fall. He threw for 279 yards with three TD strikes against Harrisburg back in September, when the won 38-6. ... Cougars’ athletic D front challenging Township’s O-line and putting pressure on Johnson. Keep an eye on that Friday for sure.

On Bishop McDevitt’s to-do list on Friday, when Manheim Central backs up the bus at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium in Harrisburg to take on the Crusaders for D3-4A gold: Slowing down MC QB Zac Hahn (2,824 passing yards, 39 TD tosses) and his 1-2 punch receiver duo of Aaron Enterline (74-1,479, 20.0 avg., 25 TD) and Bode Sipel (59-714, 6 TD). ... Three McD DB standouts to watch Friday: DB Jaire Rawlison (2 INT, 2 pass breakups) and safeties Nevan Hopkins (5 INT, 3 pass breakups) and Chase Regan (2 INT, 4 pass breakups, 8 QB hurries) have helped the Crusaders intercept 17 passes in all. In the D3 quarterfinals, Hopkins had three INT vs. Milton Hershey, and he had another pick last week in the semifinals vs. Lampeter-Strasburg. ... Harrisburg’s secondary against Central’s get-it-and-go, fly-the-friendly-skies passing attack. That’s a must-watch on Friday.
