More than 60 animals affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton in Florida are headed to Houston on Thursday and are scheduled to go up for adoption.

Houston SPCA's emergency response team was deployed to Tampa early Tuesday to provide disaster relief and hand out pet supplies with Tampa Bay's local SPCA chapter.

Tampa Bay SPCA took in an excess of animals following the hurricanes, and the Houston SPCA team is set to bring 68 of them back to the bayou city.

"Our 13-member emergency response team is now headed back from SPCA Tampa Bay with four dogs, 32 cats, 24 rabbits and eight guinea pigs," Julie Kuenstle, a spokesperson for the Houston nonprofit said.

The animals are set to arrive at the Animal Medical Center in Houston around 8 p.m. Thursday, where they will each receive a medical exam by veterinary staff before entering into the adoption program, Kuenstle said.

"The team is using three vans and two vehicles to carry these small storm victims," Kuenstle said.

The Tampa Bay and Houston SPCA chapters' partnership had been in the works since Milton first appeared on the hurricane radar. Tampa Bay SPCA had about 380 animals in its care following the hurricanes, WTSP reported .

The Houston team traveled more than 2,000 miles and 30 hours round trip.
