Motorcyclist Killed In 3-Vehicle Crash: Arlington Heights PD A 16-year-old driver is being cited for traffic violations following the Tuesday evening crash in which a Des Plaines man died.— A 44-year-old Des Plaines man was killed Tuesday night while riding his motorcycle following a three-vehicle crash. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Northwest Highway and Waterman, which is a common border of Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights.
Police said a 16-year-old driver involved was cited for failure to yield right while turning left, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. A preliminary review has excluded the presence of alcohol or drug impairment with respect to the at-fault driver. The 16-year-old is dud back in court on Nov. 21.
The Mount Prospect police and fire departments responded to the scene at around 6:30 p.m. Authorities said it was "quickly" determined the impact occurred on a section of roadway within Arlington Heights' jurisdiction.
According to preliminary information released Tuesday night, a blue 2010 Genesis coupe was travel traveling eastbound on Northwest Highway approaching Waterman. A red 2017 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound on Northwest Highway approaching Waterman. At the same time, a silver 2020 Hyundai Elantra was also traveling westbound behind the motorcycle. Police said the 16-year-old driver of the Genesis made a left turn and struck both the motorcycle and Hyundai.
First responders found the motorcyclist unresponsive and began lifesaving efforts. Mount Prospect police officers deployed an AED and started CPR. Mount Prospect Fire Department personnel arrived and took over patient treatment. The first responders determined the rider suffered fatal injuries and was beyond medical care as he was pronounced at the scene.
Northwest Highway was closed in both directions at the Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect border for a time Tuesday night while police continued investigating the crash.
Arlington Heights police are being assisted in this investigation by the Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) specialized investigative unit. Mount Prospect Police personnel assisted with traffic control.
Police said they are still in the process of notifying the family of the motorcyclist, and identification will not be released at this time. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an investigation to determine a cause and manner of death. Police said a final report usually takes between six and eight weeks to complete.
