Mountain Top 10-11 team wins district title

Bradley Papura threw a one-hitter as Mountain Top claimed the District 16 Little League 10-11 baseball championship with a 13-0 win over South Wilkes-Barre in four innings on Thursday. Papura struck out eight and allowed just two baserunners.
Keefer Hoover had the big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four RBI. Papura (two hits), Mike Geroski (double, triple, two RBI), Stew Caladie (2-3, 2 RBI), Justin Sterling (hit, two RBI), Bruce Leatherman, Garrett Swank and Evan Priest also contributed.
Ken Dewey singled for South Wilkes-Barre.

West Pittston 14,
Back Mountain American 6
F.J. Braccini, Memphis Metcalf, and Chase Yochem each had two hits as West Pittston beat American to force a championship game on Saturday.
John Angelella and Daniel Wiedl combined for seven strikeouts in the win.
Todd Phillips led American with three hits. Will McCrum and Michael Starbuck had two apiece.

SENIOR BASEBALL
Northwest 9, Swoyersville 5
Eric Gurzynski struck out eight and Tyler Harry hit a home run to lift Northwest to the district title. Zach Brucher and Hunter Nice each had a hit and drove in a run for Northwest, which will advance to sectionals on Wednesday.
Larry Andrescavage had two hits to top Swoyersville.

SENIOR BASEBALL
Nanticoke 5,
Avoca/Dupont/Pittston City 0
Mike Bugonowicz struck out nine in four innings of work as Nanticoke earned the shutout win. Tyler Myers had two hits while Kyle Rosick, Mitch Romanowski and Bugonowicz each had one.
Tyler McGarry went 2-for-3 in the loss.
The two teams will meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner claiming the district title.

SENIOR SOFTBALL
Plains 9, Carbino Club 6
Kaya Swanek pitched a complete game and clubbed a two-run home run as Plains claimed the Section 5 championships with a victory over Carbino Club.
Also contributing for Plains were Marrissa Ross (3 for 4, two doubles, two RBI, 2 runs scored), Keighlyn Oliver (2 for 4, 2 RBI), Katie Collaran (2 for 4, a double, one RBI), Elizabeth Ellsworth (2 for 3, 2 RBI) and Kayla Cunningham (two singles).
Carbino Club was led by Jess Regan, who went 4 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

Kingston/Forty Fort 10,
Greater Wyoming Area 6
In a game played Wednesday, Kingston/Forty Fort got three hits from Damian Davies to outslug Greater Wyoming Area. Zach Sott (double) and Mark Mahalick each drove in two runs while Austin Sienkiewicz had two hits.
GWA’s Max Reynolds collected three hits while Blaise Erzar added two.
LEGION BASEBALL
Greater Pittston 6, Mountain Post B 4
Tyler Loftus went 2-for-3 with three RBI as Greater Pittston pushed across two runs in the seventh to win.
Joe Gavenonis (double) and Dylan Maloney (RBI) also added two hits. Mike Carey earned the win in relief.
Eric Rinehimer led Mountain Post B, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Chase Jones’ shot to the fence brought home the winning run.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Misericordia hires new coach
Shayne McGrady, a WVC coach of the year recipient at Coughlin, has been named the new women’s volleyball coach at Misericordia, the school announced Thursday.
A graduate of Bishop Hoban and King’s College, McGrady helped lead Coughling to the state tournament this past fall.
“I’m pleased to welcome Shayne to our athletics staff,” Misericordia athletic director Dave Martin said in a statement. “His knowledge and passion for the game will be an asset to our volleyball program.”
Misericordia went 18-14 in 2012 and earned a berth in the Freedom Conference tournament.
