Mountain Top Girls Rout Plains, Face Nanticoke For Newport 9-10 Title

Ashley Casem threw a complete-game five-hitter with five strikeouts and
scored three runs to lead Mountain Top to a 21-4 victory over Plains in the
losers bracket final of the Newport 9-10 Softball Tournament.
The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Cecilia Schmid had three hits for Mountain Top, and Melanie Snyder and
Rachel Ritz had two hits apiece. Megan Waite and Ritz scored three runs
apiece.
Mountain Top will play Nanticoke in the championship round. The first game
is at 10 a.m. today. If Mountain Top wins, a second game would follow at noon.
Nanticoke needs to win just once to claim the title.
Januzzi Tournament (11-12)
Exeter 15, Pittston 5 (5)
WEST WYOMING – Ryan Carey and Glen Davis each had three hits to lead Exeter
to its 10-run rule win over Pittston.
Kody Nowicki added a double and triple for the winners, and P.J. Bone
struck out seven en route to the victory.
Kyle Callahan, Brandon Dolan and Jimmy Alfano each had a hit for Pittston.
Mountain Top 9, Swoyersville 4
WEST WYOMING – Zach Polinchak allowed just one hit and struck out 10 to
lead his team over Swoyersville.
Jonathan Wojmar went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead Mountain Top’s
offense, and Ryan Veshada added three hits.
Polinchak and Zach Berg each contributed a pair of hits for the winners.
Joe Olejnick had Swoyersville’s lone hit.
Wilkes-Barre Rec Tournament (11-12)
Back Mountain American 11, Nanticoke 1 (5 inn.)
NANTICOKE – Back Mountain’s Kevin Muldoon and Steven Ruch each had two
hits, including a home run apiece, to lead their team to a 10-run rule win.
Zach Dirsa allowed two hits in earning the win, and Aaron Perez added a
pair of RBI.
John Ivan had a double for Nanticoke.
Exeter 8-9 Tournament
Pittston City 15, Wilkes-Barre North End 1 (4)
EXETER – Winning pitcher Tyler Spurdin tossed three scoreless innings and
homered to lead Pittston City.
Justin Peterson had three hits for Pittston City, and Josh Neal and Chris
Cummings had two hits apiece.
KUBIS TOURNAMENT
Jenkins Twp. 10, Ed/Lark 3
Winning pitcher Anthony Schwab struck out 10 to pace Jenkins Township on
Thursday. Offensively, Brian Delany had a hit and two RBI.
Tyler McGovern had two hits for Ed/Lark.
West Pittston 11, Pittston 9
Julian Campenni singled, doubled and drove in two runs to lead West
Pittston on Tuesday. Louie Vullo had a single and double for the winners, and
Ray Hassey added two hits.
Codi Rowan had a double for Pittston and struck out nine on the mound.
