Charisa Alexus Palsha, daughter of Edward and Margaret Palsha of Dorrance,
graduated from Luzerne County Community College with a degree in dental
hygiene. Palsha also earned the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award, given to a
graduating student who demonstrates excellent clinical dental hygiene skills,
and the Dental Hygiene Association Academic Scholarship. She is a 2002
Crestwood High School graduate and plans to pursue a career as a dental
hygienist in the Philadelphia area.
Dr. William D. Camp, professor of sociology and history at Luzerne County
Community College, received a grant from the National Endowment to the
Humanities to study at the Ramsey Center of Mars College in North Carolina.
Camp will participate in the NEH’s Landmarks of American History workshop,
Working in the Woods: Economies and Cultures in the Blue Ridge Mountains,
arts degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a doctorate from Carnegie
Mellon University. Camp has participated in NEH programs at Brandeis, Harvard
and Boston universities and resides in Dallas with his wife, Ann.
Desiree Boris, daughter of Charles and Grace Boris of Wilkes-Barre, was
named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Mansfield University,
where she is pursuing dual certification in elementary education and special
education. Boris became the first Mountaineer women’s soccer player to earn
all-conference honors when she was named to the All-Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference East Team.
Peter J. Saccone graduated magna cum laude in the spring from The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia with a bachelor of science degree
in biology/pre-med. Saccone was awarded the Marin S. Dunn Memorial Prize for
Biology for his academic achievement. He is a 2001 Hazleton Area High School
graduate, son of Bob and Kathy Saccone of Drums and in August will attend the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Martin J. Musto II of Shavertown was named to the dean’s list for the
spring quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. Musto is a first-year
student in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information
Sciences, where he is studying information technology, applied networking and
systems administration. He is son of Martin and Theresa Musto of Shavertown
and a 2004 Dallas Senior High School graduate.
Melonie Sappe, a Juniata College student, was selected to join Omicron
Delta Kappa, The National Leadership Honor Society, based on exceptional
leadership, character and scholarship. Sappe is daughter of Lou and Cheryl
Sappe of Shavertown and is studying biology and secondary education. She is a
Elizabeth Stella, a junior at Wilkes-Barre’s King’s College, earned the
full-tuition William G. McGowan Scholarship for the 2005-06 academic year.
Stella, of Exeter, is majoring in international business and Spanish and
studying in Rome this summer as part of the King’s College-John Cabot
University Study Abroad program. The McGowan scholarship is awarded to
full-time students who are pursuing their primary majors within the McGowan
School of Business, are entering their senior years at the college, have
achieved minimum 3.0 grade-point averages and have submitted essays on the
contributions McGowan made to today’s business world or to the
telecommunications field.
Kristen L. Reilly graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with
a bachelor’s degree in new media. Reilly is daughter of Ruthann Reilly of
Danville and Joseph C. Reilly of Shavertown and a 2001 Danville Area graduate.
Richard Lazar graduated with highest honors from Rochester Institute of
Technology with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Lazar is son of Mary
Ann and Richard Lazar of Plains Township and a 2000 Seton Catholic High School
graduate.
Jaime Karpovich of Kingston graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in
mass communications from Cedar Crest College. Karpovich also was chosen as the
traditional student speaker to address the crowd at the commencement. She was
a dean’s-list student and inducted into the Pi Kappa Delta honor society.
Karpovich is a 2001 Wyoming Valley West High School graduate, daughter of
MaryLou Stefanovich of Kingston and the late Ron Karpovich and step-daughter
of Rich Stefanovich.
