Business National flooring company to close Centre County store. Liquidation sales are on tap

LL Flooring, formerly known as Lumber Liquidators, plans to close all remaining stores in the coming weeks, including a location in Centre County.

An employee at LL Flooring's State College store , located at 1524 N. Atherton St., confirmed its closure to the Centre Daily Times Friday afternoon. A closing date has not been finalized, but LL Flooring expects all stores to shutter within roughly 12 weeks.

As State College's LL Flooring prepares to close, the store will run progressive liquidation sales with larger percentages taken off prices as inventory runs low. At least three employees are expected to lose their jobs.

The American flooring company announced its planned closures in a letter to customers published Friday . The news comes nearly a month after LL Flooring filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid unsuccessful efforts to find a buyer for the company.

"We have actively negotiated with multiple bidders, but these discussions have not resulted in an offer, with the necessary financing, that would maximize the value of LL Flooring," Chief Executive Officer Charles Tyson wrote. "As a result, it is with a heavy heart that we must let you know that we are going to begin the process of winding down LL Flooring's business and closing all of our stores."

LL Flooring operates 21 stores in Pennsylvania, including locations in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie, Chambersburg, Williamsport and Erie. The company runs 425 stores across the U.S., according to its website, with the highest concentration of locations in California (37), Florida (32) and Texas (26).

LL Flooring launched "out of a pickup truck" in Massachusetts in the early 1990s and grew to a well-known retailer of hard-surface flooring options, including hardwood flooring, vinyl, bamboo, cork, laminate, tile and waterproof vinyl. The company rebranded to LL Flooring in 2020 and filed for bankruptcy Aug. 11.

State College's LL Flooring store operates with the following hours, according to its website: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.
