National Night Out to bring community and police together

ST. LOUIS – Police and community members all around the St. Louis area will come together Tuesday night for the annual National Night Out.

During National Night Out, it's all about trying to establish positive relationships between police and residents. Celebrations and block parties are planned at many locations throughout the city and in other communities as well.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones is slated to attend the Great Rivers Greenway Northside Night Out. The event will run from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday evening and is taking place on the 3600 block of Hebert Street in north St. Louis City. Mayor Jones is set to give remarks about 5:15 p.m.

The idea of National Night Out is to help strengthen trust between communities and law enforcement, making neighborhoods safer. There will be free food, music, art, and vendors.

The National Night Out has been going on for years. In many places it happens on the first Tuesday in August, but it was moved in some areas, including the St. Louis region, to the first Tuesday in October because of the extreme summer heat.

The city of Dellwood is hosting a National Night Out event at the city's recreation center, located at 10266 West Florissant Avenue, taking place from 5-8 p.m. There will be lots happening, including music, vendors, and plenty of food and other refreshments.

The city of Edwardsville is also hosting an event at the city park there, located at 101 South Buchanan Street. The vent will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday night. There will be giveaways there, along with bounce houses, free food and much more.
