NBC4’s 2024 ‘Veterans Voices’ special
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — NBC4's Veterans' Voices special, airing on Veterans Day 2024, offers a tribute to the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.
Hosted by NBC4 anchors Colleen Marshall and Kerry Charles, the program focuses on the stories of veterans who made significant sacrifices for their country. Through their experiences, viewers are given a deeper understanding of their challenges and achievements, shedding light on their stories of bravery, struggle, and resilience.
One of the program's highlights is a feature on three trailblazing women of color who served in the military. Hailing from different towns and generations, these women demonstrated their commitment to their country and confronted challenges unique to their experiences. Their stories reflect the difficulties of breaking barriers while navigating systemic obstacles.
Another key segment of the special focuses on Honor Flight Columbus, a nonprofit organization dedicated to taking veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials built in their honor. This important initiative has taken thousands of veterans on a transformative journey to pay tribute to their service. Last month, Honor Flight Columbus reached a major milestone, escorting its 10,000th veteran. NBC4 takes viewers behind the scenes to showcase the impact of this nonprofit on the lives of veterans in central Ohio.
The special explores the powerful story of local veteran Steven Snyder Hill, who vowed to never live inauthentically because of who he loved. His experience of service and sacrifice, compounded by the struggles of living in a society that did not fully accept him, is a poignant reminder of the personal battles many veterans face.
The program also highlights the groundbreaking career of Captain David Harris, a Black pilot who broke barriers in aviation and served as a trailblazer for future generations of Black military pilots. His remarkable journey, along with the lasting legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, underscores the importance of representation in the military.
