Natchitoches Central High School volleyball standout Tatum Kay was recently recognized as the non-football "Athlete of the Week" for northwest Louisiana by a Shreveport-based website.

The honor is based on voting by fans who visit the website. Kay prevailed in an online poll that included standouts from area high schools who participate in volleyball, cross country, swimming and cheerleading. Nominations were submitted by their coaches.

Kay prevailed in the opening week of voting in the contest.

Kay accumulated 14,678 votes, 49.9 percent of the 29,397 votes cast in the weekly online recognition. Those numbers allowed Kay to top a field of 11 additional candidates, including Benton's Brody Hutchison, who finished in second place with 10,770 votes (36.6 percent).

NCHS volleyball moved to 10-2 this season after a three-set domination of Benton on Thursday night. The Lady Chiefs play again Tuesday evening at home against District 1-5A foe Southwood, and again Wednesday at home against Loyola College Prep. NCHS is 3-0 in district.
