ND Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation recognized for reducing reincarcerations
BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Some prisons in North Dakota have recently gotten full, and it is up to the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (ND DOCR) to figure out how to prioritize inmates. Despite this issue, the ND DOCR has been nationally recognized for reducing reincarcerations from community supervision.
The department received the Reentry Success Award from Recidiviz, a nonprofit that partners with corrections agencies to use technology and real-time data to improve reentry outcomes. The award recognizes the partner state that achieved the largest reduction in people being reincarcerated while under supervision. North Dakota led the nation with a 13% decrease, more than twice as much as any other Recidiviz partner state.
"This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and our commitment to providing people under supervision with the support they need to successfully reintegrate into our communities," said DOCR Director Colby Braun. "By leveraging data and focusing our efforts on those who need it most, we're not only improving lives but also enhancing public safety and making responsible use of taxpayer resources."
DOCR's success stems from many things, including their partnership with Recidiviz to implement their Supervision Assistant. This tool helps probation and parole officers identify those who might be ready for reduced supervision or discharge so they can focus on those who need more support. The department has also developed a substance use treatment program that helps people overcome addiction and avoid relapse.
"North Dakota's focus on providing meaningful support and opportunities for people under supervision is truly inspiring," said Clementine Jacoby, CEO of Recidiviz. "Their data-driven strategies and commitment to rehabilitation are making a tangible difference in people's lives and creating safer communities."
