NEW BEDFORD ( WBSM ) — A campaign headquarters for the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz presidential campaign will open in New Bedford on Sunday in the city's South End.

The headquarters will be operated by "a diverse coalition of community organizers," according to spokesperson Carleen Cordwell. It will be located at 213 Acushnet Avenue, the site of the Underground Railroad Cafe, located across from Monte Park.

There will be an opening celebration this Sunday, September 15 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Cordwell said the group reached out to the Democratic party to get a Harris/Walz office in New Bedford, but received a surprising response.

"We were told there was no need for a headquarters in Massachusetts because it's a blue state," she said. "I think that's very naive considering what's going on in the country today. We need to mobilize, we need to get as many new registered voters and get the vote out so we can have large numbers."

"Anyone who thinks we don't need to do it is naive," she repeated.

The city already has a campaign headquarters for the Donald Trump campaign, led by former Bristol County Sheriff and Massachusetts Trump Campaign Chair Tom Hodgson. That office is located in the DeMello International Center in downtown New Bedford.

The group opening the Harris-Walz headquarters has previous experience in opening a local office for a national presidential campaign.

"In the past, we did the Obama headquarters. We did it on our own, all activists and organizers," Cordwell said. "The campaign caught wind of it three weeks in, and then sent us a phone list, a postcard list, and we registered 4,000 voters."

The public is invited to attend the campaign headquarters opening on Sunday and join in on the various volunteer services needed. Volunteers are needed to address postcards, assist with voter registration, make phone calls and attend visibility sessions.
