SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – A new marker is shining a light on a meaningful addition to Savannah's rich history.

The "A World Apart" memorial on River Street includes the names of 527 fallen heroes from World War II.

But a new marker has been installed next to the split globe helping to better explain the memorial and recognize the group that created it.

The marker was given to the city by Harriet Meyerhoff, widow of architect Eric Meyerhoff, and highlights Savannah's significant role during the war.

Eric Meyerhoff – who designed the memorial – led a riverfront project that transformed a neglected area into a vibrant park in 1977.

"It brings closure. People would come here, we read it online, that tourists love to see the memorial, but they didn't understand it," said Harriet Meyerhoff.

"Why didn't we have a marker? Unfortunately, the vets ran out of money," she continued. "I promised my husband before he died that I would make sure that a marker would be placed here."

The marker also includes a message highlighting Savannah's role in the war, such as supplying ships and other items.

In total, there are more than 50 historical markers in Chatham County.
