US Senate race in New Mexico
Incumbent Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich will face businesswoman and Republican challenger Nella Domenici in his bid for a third term in the U.S. Senate.
Heinrich has had a long career in public office, serving two terms as a senator, two terms in the U.S. House and a four-year term as an Albuquerque city councilor.
Meanwhile, Heinrich's Republican challenger, Domenici, is the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, who served from 1973 to 2009 and was the last Republican elected to the U.S. Senate in New Mexico.
US House races in New Mexico
Voters will also elect three candidates to serve in the House from each of the state's congressional districts.
The biggest of the three will be in the state's 2nd Congressional District , where Democratic first-term congressman Gabe Vasquez will go head to head in a highly competitive race against former Representative Yvette Herrell , the Republican he defeated two years ago.
Vasquez flipped the district, which extends from the U.S. border with Mexico to Albuquerque, to Democratic control in 2022 under newly drawn congressional boundaries that divided up a major oil-producing region of New Mexico among three districts.
New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District has flipped red to blue and back since it was established in 1969. Vasquez is seeking to be the first Democratic congressman reelected in 40 years, reported NPR.
The two have clashed on the border crisis as well as on reproductive rights.
On Tuesday, 468 seats in the U.S. Congress (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election. These elections will determine who has control over the two branches of Congress, and ultimately, who sets the agenda for the next president's term.
New Mexico last voted for a Republican president in 2004, and though former president Donald Trump tried his hand at turning New Mexico red last cycle, Biden won in 2020 by roughly 10 points .
New Mexico has 5 Electoral College votes contributing to the presidential race. The presidential election winner must earn 270 Electoral College votes to assume office.
Early voting started in New Mexico on October 8, and polls for in-person voting run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, is the deadline to register in person to vote.
