UPMC and Veteran Affairs (VA) Health Care have partnered up to provide a community nurse liaison program that extends services to veterans statewide.

The model would place VA registered nurses into eight UPMC hospitals around the state, including UPMC Hamot in Erie.

Those nurses familiar with the needs of veterans will streamline their care, helping to coordinate therapy, provide prescriptions and more.

"This nurse liaison helps in many ways — the veteran use the VA as a payer source, enroll in VA benefits, plan for discharge and receive follow-up care in both VA and its community partners," said Mark Migala, director of veteran care services at UPMC.
