New Orleans Saints fire head coach Dennis Allen after losing to Carolina Panthers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WGHP) — The New Orleans Saints have relieved head coach Dennis Allen of his duties following the team's one-point loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Monday that Allen has been fired following the Saints' 2-7 start to the season and seventh consecutive loss in a row.
It was quite a fall from grace for New Orleans who dominated the Panthers 47-10 in Week One and also dominated the Dallas Cowboys 44-19 during a 2-0 start to the season.
Several Saints players took to social media to express their frustrations following the loss to a heated rival in the Panthers which is among the teams with the worst records in the NFL.
Another Saints defensive lineman, Khalen Saunders, took to X to lament the state of the Saints' season in a series of posts.
Saunders also appeared to take a shot at New Orleans' starting quarterback Derek Carr in another tweet.
Carr also caught the ire of another former Saints star after New Orleans' star wide receiver Chris Olave suffered a concussion attempting to catch a pass that some considered to be a "hospital ball" thrown by Carr.
A "hospital ball" generally refers to a pass thrown in a risky location that leaves the wide receiver in a vulnerable position to suffer a big hit.
Michael Thomas, a former All-Pro wide receiver, who last played for the Saints in 2023, took to X to fire off a series of posts heavily criticizing Carr.
Allen had not yet been fired by the Saints at the time of the post.
New Orleans also made history during Sunday's loss to Carolina as they were the first team in 20 years to lose a game where they outgained their opponent by over 150 yards, ran for 150 yards and won the turnover battle.
According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell , teams were 275-0 in the last 20 years under those circumstances until the Saints' loss to the Panthers on Sunday.
