SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — On Thursday, November 7, 80 candidates from 39 countries took the Oath of Allegiance in Storer Auditorium, officially becoming U.S. citizens. For many, this ceremony represents their active participation in American democracy, a system they now have the right to shape and influence.

For most, the path to citizenship is far from easy. It involves unique struggles, such as navigating the immigration process and learning a new culture.

Among the new citizens, Girsewak Singh, a U.S. military solider from India, feels proud at this moment, just as he did when he started serving.

"I already feel a really proud moment as a US military soldier, so I feel the same today. But it's a great thing. Like American, yeah I'm proud," said Singh.
