New York election results 2024
( NewsNation ) — Voters in New York will cast their ballots Tuesday in some key races in the 2024 election .
Presidential race in New York
US Senate race in New York
Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is running for her third term facing Republican challenger Mike Sapraicone , a retired NYPD detective.
Gilibrand has had her seat since 2009 and is expected to come out on top as Democratic voters outnumber Republicans in the state by more than 2 to 1, according to the Democrat & Chronicle.
No Republican has won statewide office in New York in 22 years since then-Gov. George Pataki's second reelection in 2002.
US House races in New York
Voters will also elect 15 candidates to serve in the House from each of the state's congressional districts.
Eleven districts within a 90-mile drive of Manhattan are expected to be among the country's most closely contested House races on Election Day.
Republicans hold a slim 6-5 edge now in the nearly contiguous circle that starts in the Long Island suburbs, cuts through western Connecticut and New York's Hudson River Valley and Catskills regions then carves through Eastern Pennsylvania before curling back into New Jersey.
In 2022, Republicans flipped four seats in New York that were central to taking control of the House.
In New York's 22nd Congressional District, first-term GOP Rep. Brandon Williams kept the seat in Republican hands in 2022 but will have to push hard against two-term Democratic state Sen. John Mannion. House Speaker Mike Johnson campaigned with Williams saying his race "may very well be one of the decision points on whether we keep the majority"
The district, which includes Syracuse and Utica, is now one of Democrats' top pickup opportunities with the party rallying behind Mannion.
Another GOP incumbent will face a tough challenge in the state's 4th Congressional District. Rep. Anthony D'Esposito helped Republicans flip the House in 2022 but is now one of its most vulnerable members, defending a left-leaning Long Island seat from challenger Laura Gillen, a former Hempstead town supervisor.
Republican Mike Lawler faces a tough reelection campaign in New York's 17th Congressional District against Mondaire Jones. Jones is a former Democratic congressman who was one of the first two openly gay Black men to serve in the House when he was elected in 2020. Jones lost his seat when the boundaries of his district were redrawn.
Statewide ballot measures in New York
Voters will also need to decide on a measure that would preserve the right to abortion.
New York doesn't explicitly preserve a right to abortion but includes it under broader equal rights protections. New York's Proposal 1 would bar unequal treatment based on "pregnancy outcomes" and "reproductive health care and autonomy" along with sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin and disability.
Abortion is currently legal in New York up to fetal viability. The measure, which is legislatively referred, has faced several challenges on its road to the ballot.
On Tuesday, 468 seats in the U.S. Congress (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election. These elections will determine who has control over the two branches of Congress, and ultimately, who sets the agenda for the next president's term.
New York has 28 Electoral College votes contributing to the presidential race and has long been blue, voting Democratic in the last nine elections. The presidential election winner must earn 270 Electoral College votes to assume office.
Early voting started in New York on October 26. Timings for polls for in-person voting vary by location.
