Flack garden is planned

Grace Episcopal Church of Kingston invites the community to the groundbreaking of the Rusty Flack Memorial Gardens on Sunday.

The groundbreaking celebration begins at 11:30 a.m., after the 10 a.m. Holy Eucharist service. Flack was a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church, 30 Butler St., Kingston, where he served as lector, choir member, vestryman and senior warden.

A reception given by the women of St. Martha’s Guild will follow the groundbreaking event along with a blessing of the backpacks for children going back to school. Donations to the Rusty Flack Memorial Gardens continue to be accepted through the Luzerne Foundation.

WILKES-BARRE
Work set for Rt. 309

There will be a single-lane closure on state Route 309 South between Exit 3 (Wilkes-Barre/Plains – River Street) and Exit 2 (Wilkes-Barre Center City) to complete repairs on the bridge over the Susquehanna River.

This work was originally being conducted at night, however, cold temperatures overnight are preventing the polycarb material from setting.

This work will take place 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Saturday this week, and Monday through Saturday next week.

Major delays are expected, especially during the afternoon rush hour. PennDOT recommends motorists seek alternate routes, if possible.

WILKES-BARRE
Kistler bed bug dealt with

Wilkes-Barre Area School District found itself dealing with another bed bug Tuesday, but Interim Superintendent Bernard Prevuznak said the district followed protocol and returned to regular classes at Kistler Elementary on Wednesday morning.

The room was evacuated and Ehrlich Pest Control came in and identified the insect as a bed bug, Prevuznak said. The room was sprayed overnight to eliminate the risk.

The bugs began appearing in several area schools last year, including Wilkes-Barre Area’s GAR High School.


Sewer project gets started

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at noon Sept. 11 at for the Nuangola Sewer Project, which is funded by USDA Rural Development Loans and Grants.

The groundbreaking will take place at 5150 Nuangola Road, Mountain Top, after a pre-construction conference. The new sewer system for t borough will serve an estimated 420 users, officials said.

Groups will watch Obama

Organizing for America Pennsylvania volunteers will gather tonight in homes, restaurants, campaign field offices and community centers to watch President Barack Obama accept the Democratic nomination.

At the Wilkes-Barre OFA PA field office, 70 S. Main St., before the president’s speech, volunteers will also host a phone bank starting at 8 p.m. and then watch Obama’s speech.

There’ll be another gathering at Brews Brothers, 1705 River Road, Jenkins Township, starting at 8. It’s hosted by Wyoming Mayor Bob Boyer.
