Newsstand: OSU AD Gene Smith involved in altercation on sideline

S.Wright3 months ago

Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State met on Saturday to renew their storied rivalry, which came with its fair share of emotions throughout the afternoon in U-M’s 30-24 victory. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith was part of it, too, getting involved in an altercation with a Michigan event staffer during the game.

According to Outkick’s Trey Wallace , Smith was involved in a verbal spat with a Michigan employee in the third quarter of Saturday’s game for failing to stay behind the yellow line on the sideline after an Ohio State touchdown in the third quarter.

Wallace said:

After the Michigan-clad security official told Smith to get behind the “damn line,” the Ohio State AD went off. Smith used an expletive at the official, who was getting in his face, before another official arrived.

During the back and forth, Smith said, “I can get the Big Ten in here to handle this.”

The altercation quickly de-escalated as both Smith and security moved in opposite directions.

It is interesting Smith invoked the Big Ten, but we know that’s a card that the Buckeyes have liked to play in the not-so-distant past.

Regardless, Michigan will play next weekend in Indianapolis for a shot at its third-straight Big Ten Championship against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes will sit at home for the third year in a row, and hope for a second season in a row they can find a way to back into the College Football Playoff.

— Zak Zinter November 26, 2023 Michigan quote of the day

“I think everything. It’s crazy to feel the energy in this building and in our building, in the room with the players. Extremely excited to win the game but they expected to win it. They want to go down there next week in Indy, they’re familiar with it, we’re going to play a really good team. But we want to go win that. We’re not satisfied with just winning that. We’ve got bigger goals, we have all the goals, we have everything we have worked for and we’re going to continue to pursue that. These guys have earned that opportunity to go to those places and go win. Just excited for these kids up here.”
