NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk celebrated the reopening of its new and improved human services building Friday.

Norfolk DHS Director Denise Gallop, alongside Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander, cut the ribbon after a 14-month, $1.4 million renovation.

"It just brings me so much joy because we work so hard, and the work that we do is also heart work," Gallop said.

Her team is also excited to work in the new space, where they serve around 100,000 Norfolk residents in very tough situations.

"Mental health issues and addiction, and even your children being removed from you, so the last thing that we ever wanted to do was add to that pressure by having an environment that made people feel hope less," Gallop said.

New family visitation rooms feel more like home with places for kids to play or to eat a meal with their parent.

There are computer work stations with internet access in which people can apply for work or print information to apply for benefits.

There are also dimly lit and comfortable wellness rooms to support employees whose jobs can be emotionally draining.

Outside, the mayor drove a city car through a new customer service window. Gallop said it will be a boon for those with mobility issues, those who are short on time, or for those who simply can't find a parking space.

"It's just wonderful that we continue to invest in people in the city of Norfolk," Alexander said.

They are investments the mayor and Gallop believe will allow these workers to serve others with the dignity and respect they all deserve.
