North Myrtle Beach animal rescue buys 10+ acre property in Longs

(WBTW) — An animal rescue in North Myrtle Beach just started a multi-million-dollar project in order to hold more animals.

Kind Keeper is a nonprofit organization with the mission to save the lives of homeless pets. It recently purchased a 10-plus acre property on Water Tower Road in Longs, just six miles from their location.

"We'll be able to hold at least three-times the amount that we have total, that's including our foster animals," event coordinator Britney Hauser said. "So, it's not just who's in here right now."

Hauser said they've been operating out of their current facility since 2015, which holds up to 50 animals.

"It used to be an old military barrack, so it's on its last leg," she said. "And we're raising money to move to our new property."

Hauser said they currently have 10 large kennels and two "whelping" rooms, specifically for moms and their puppies. She said it's time to expand because once they reach capacity, they can't allow any more animals in until the ones they have are fostered or adopted.

"We have two dogs outside right now, but we have lots of heads inside," she said. "We also have some in offices too, because we hate to say 'no' to people even though we have to."

Because of generous donors and fundraisers, Hauser said they reached more than $500,000 to start construction once they're approved for a permit.

"We'll have offices, we'll have an event space, we'll have a veterinarian clinic, so people can get affordable spay and neuter because that's very tough in this area," she said.

Hauser said their new facility will also have room to host in-house training for animals and their owners. There's no set date for when they'll break ground, but they're still looking for sponsorships and volunteers for their new facility.
