Notes, stats and more on Trinity's PIAA 2A girls volleyball final against Corry
The PIAA girls volleyball tournament consists of four classifications. Among the Class 2A bracket and the 16 teams that vie for state gold each fall, Trinity stands alone in one accomplishment.
With Saturday's PIAA final at Cumberland Valley, the Shamrocks are the lone squad to qualify for the last dance in four of the last five years.
Trinity, the District 3 champion, faces District 10 titleholder Corry in the championship tilt at 1 p.m.
Here's all the details on the match.
Corry (19-1) vs. Trinity (23-0)
How they got here: The Shamrocks are yet to misstep in PIAA play, sweeping their competition across three separate matches. Trinity disposed of Villa Joseph Marie in first-round action (25-18, 25-20 and 25-14) before toughing out winning scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 26-24 in a quarterfinal against Forest Hills. Lansdale Catholic was little challenge in Tuesday's semifinals, dropping 25-17, 25-13 and 25-15 decisions.
The Beavers survived back-to-back 3-2 results in quarterfinal and semifinal play. Corry escaped District 6 champion Richland (23-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-23 and 15-13) in the former before banking 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23 and 15-8 outcomes in the latter. The Beavers fortified their dam in a 3-0 opener (25-14, 25-21 and 25-18) against Neshannock.
Trinity player to watch: Jayda Gray. Winning a state title requires experience, and Gray is the seasoned veteran of the Trinity unit. The Delaware commit clubbed a team-high 10 kills in Tuesday's semifinal, pairing with 14 digs on defense. Gray was tabbed the Mid-Penn Keystone All-Division Player of the Year last week.
Corry player to watch: Grace Allen. The sophomore adds some young spunk to the Corry rotation from her outside hitter spot. Allen paces the Beavers with 166 kills this fall while chipping in 61 digs and 15 blocks.
Notes: The Shamrocks are setting sail for their second PIAA title in program history and their first since 2020. Trinity secured a 3-1 victory over Philipsburg-Osceola that year and have dropped its last two appearances — in 2021 and 2023 — to North Catholic (3-0) and a similar Mountaineer outfit (3-1).
The Beavers have advanced to their second PIAA final and seek their second title. Corry cashed in on its only appearance in 2016, defeating North Star 3-1 for the 2A crown. The Beavers' three previous PIAA stints — in 2021, 2022 and 2023 — all ended in first-round play.
