NEW YORK (PIX11) — A police-involved shooting at the Sutter Avenue subway station in Brooklyn on Sunday sparked controversy, with protesters using the incident to advocate for free fares.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell spoke with PIX on Politics host Dan Mannarino about the shooting, which resulted in injuries to several bystanders and a police officer.

Chell emphasized that the shooting was not due to fare evasion but that the suspect was armed with a knife.

"The action that we took was not based on someone who did not pay $2.80. We have to acknowledge the fact that a knife is a deadly weapon. It will kill you. The people who put this narrative out should know better. Shame on them. It was ignorant, it was wrong, and so disingenuous to put this out," said Chell.

"Let me make it very clear. We take responsibility but the intent was to get this man help, protect the passengers, and do the best we could," he added.
