A resident from O'Donnell, Texas, is $1 million richer after hitting big on Mega Millions.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed a prize worth $1 million from the Mega Millions drawing held Sept. 6 . The winning ticket was purchased at Stripes Store, located at 1912 N. Dallas Ave., in Lamesa, Texas.

The winning Quick Pick ticket without the Megaplier add-on matched all five of the white ball numbers drawn (6, 23, 41, 59, 63), but not the gold Mega Ball number (25). The Megaplier was 2X.

O'Donnell is located in West Texas about 44 miles south of Lubbock. The population of the city is 704, according to 2020 U.S. Census data .

In addition to the winner from O'Donnell, there were five other tickets in the country that won the second-tier prize. One of those tickets, purchased in Ohio, had the Megaplier option added to win $2 million. The other four — sold in California, Florida, Illinois and New Hampshire — took home $1 million each.

The drawing on Sept. 6 was part of a jackpot run that ended on the very next drawing on Sept 10 . That $800 million jackpot-winning ticket was purchased in Sugar Land, Texas. A cash prize of $409,297,624 was claimed by the Sol Living Trust of Sugar Land .

As of Thursday, Nov. 7, the Mega Millions jackpot had grown to $334 million with a $155.7 million cash payout.

Mega Millions is played by choosing five numbers from a field of 70 and one Mega Ball number from a second field of 25 numbers. To win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all six numbers drawn, including the Mega Ball. Players matching fewer numbers may not win the jackpot but still could walk away winners. Mega Millions currently offers a $20 million starting jackpot and a second-tier (Match 5+0) prize of $1 million. The jackpot grows from there based on ticket sales.

Players also can choose to add Megaplier for $1 more per play, which gives them a chance to multiply any nonjackpot winnings by two, three, four or five times. That means second-tier prizes can be worth as much as $5 million.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 302,575,350-to-1, while players have a 1-in-12,607,306 chance of winning a second-tier prize.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are broadcast in Texas every Tuesday and Friday at 10:12 p.m. CT.
