Officials: Two firefighters bit by racoon while responding to Somerset County house fire

Officials say two firefighters were reportedly attacked by a raccoon while responding to a house fire in Somerset County Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say flames broke out at the home, along Somerset Pike in Conemaugh Township, around 1 p.m.

Officials say a raccoon that was living at the house bit two firefighters.

Investigators say the firefighters were wearing gloves and are doing okay.

One of the firefighters was taken to the hospital to get checked out.

Officials say several dogs and cats were also rescued from the home, but a few animals did not survive.

As for the raccoon, the Game Commission responded to the scene and is handling the investigation.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital and multiple animals are being treated after a house fire in Somerset County Sunday afternoon.

According to emergency officials, crews were dispatched tp a residence on the 5300 block of Somerset Pike after calls came in just before 1 p.m. for reports of a house fire.

Officials said one firefighter was transported for unspecified injuries to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

Officials also said an emergency vet from Somerset is heading to the scene to care for multiple animals that were inside the residence at the time.

According to the Boswell Police Department, Somerset Pike is closed between Gilbert Hollow Road and Jerome Hill Road at this time.
