Omaha volleyball punches ticket to first NCAA tournament after clinching Summit League title

VERMILLION, S.D. — Omaha volleyball rallied from two sets down against Kansas City to win its first Summit League tournament title and earn its first berth in the NCAA tournament.

The Mavs completed an epic comeback with an 18-25. 20-25, 26-24, 25-12, 15-11 win Tuesday night in a match that lasted 2 hours, 35 minutes.

UNO was down 21-19 to UMKC in the third set before finishing on a 7-3 run. The Mavs scored the last 10 points of the fourth set and then only trailed at 1-0 in the fifth.

Kali Jurgensmeier, who missed most of the season with a knee injury, had four kills in the fifth set, including one on match point to set off a celebration.

Both teams finished with more than 105 digs as the match was filled with long rallies.

Rachel Fairbanks had 15 kills and 27 digs for the Mavs, while McKenna Ruch was a force at middle blocker with 15 kills and 14 blocks. Shayla McCormick had 13 kills and 30 digs, Jurgensmeier and Amanda Hardt each finished with 11 kills.

UNO will find out Sunday afternoon where it will head for the NCAA tournament.
