Omaha volleyball starts Shocker Classic with win over Northern Colorado
WICHITA, Kan. — Omaha started the Shocker Classic with a quality win over Northern Colorado, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25, Thursday afternoon.
It was the second win this season for the Mavs and dropped Northern Colorado to 8-3. The Bears' only other losses are to Florida and Mississippi and they have wins over Michigan State and Colorado.
UNO set the tone in a first set featured 14 ties before Omaha won the last two points. At 23-23, Amanda Hardt had a kill and Brynlee Arnold followed with another kill on set point.
UNO got some separation in the second set with a 4-1 push to make it 13-9. The Bears never got closer than three the rest of the set as Emily Huss ended it with a kill.
Omaha led 11-6 in the third before Northern Colorado stormed in front with an 8-2 run. UNO regained the lead at 18-16, but the Bears extended the match with a 9-2 run to finish the third.
The Mavs also led most of the fourth set as their lead was 21-16. UNC scored six straight to take the lead, but the Mavs responded by giving themselves three match points, ending it on a Sarah Galligan kill.
Omaha hit .253 for the match as McKenna Ruch led the way with 16 kills and a .414 hitting percentage. Kali Jurgensmier added 14 kills and nine digs, Hardt had 13 kills and Shayla McCormick added eight kills and a team-best 13 digs.
UNO continues play in Wichita by facing Cal Poly at 2 p.m. Friday.
