Omaha woman sentenced to 50 months of probation for role in man's beating death
A 28-year-old woman will serve more than four years' probation in connection with the fatal beating of a man at a South Omaha apartment complex.
Jessica Hernandez of Omaha appeared Wednesday in Douglas County District Court after pleading no contest to tampering with evidence. She was sentenced to 50 months probation. The charge stemmed from the June 2 death of Carlos Salguero-Canar, 30, at an apartment complex near 27th and Harrison Streets.
In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dismissed the charge of manslaughter. Hernandez had faced up to two years in prison for tampering with evidence.
Prosecutors said Hernandez called 911 and allegedly relayed false information about Salguero-Canar's injuries. She told police that she didn't know how he had gotten injured, but prosecutors accused her of being behind the deadly beating, inviting Nadim Zarazua-Hernandez to beat up Salguero-Canar.
Prosecutors said Hernandez kept Salguero-Canar's phone after his death and deleted his WhatsApp and Snapchat accounts.
Zarazua-Hernandez Jr., 26, a Bellevue resident, pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the deadly beating. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in December.
According to a brief statement from prosecutors during an initial court appearance, surveillance video from the apartment complex showed Salguero-Canar and Zarazua-Hernandez involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot. It didn't appear in the video that Salguero-Canar fought back as he was repeatedly hit in the head.
Zarazua-Hernandez punched Salguero-Canar multiple times in the head and neck until he fell unconscious. His cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head.
