NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A two-car crash on Chef Menteur Highway Sunday night (Sept. 29) resulted in the death of one woman and left another person injured, according to the NOPD.

The accident occurred around 8 p.m., when a Ford Fusion, reportedly speeding westbound, struck the rear of a Nissan Maxima.

After the initial collision, the Ford veered off the roadway, hitting a tree and slamming into a telephone pole near Chef Menteur Highway and Chantilly Drive. NOPD investigators said the vehicle was then overturned.

Emergency responders took a woman from the Ford to the hospital with critical injuries, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A man in the exact vehicle was also hospitalized with what authorities describe as minor injuries.

Officials have not yet confirmed who was driving the car at the time of the crash.

Shortly after officers arrived on the scene, the male passenger allegedly became combative, leading to a scuffle with police.

He is expected to face charges of battery on a police officer once released from the hospital.

The occupants of the Nissan Maxima were unharmed, police reported.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at (504) 822-1111.
