Officers learned that the shooting was related to a road rage incident that occurred near Five Points, that continued to Busey and Park.

A verbal altercation occurred between a car with a female driver and a male passenger and a solo male driver. UPD said the male driver drove past the female driver, and was followed by the two. The solo driver pulled into Carle Hospital's emergency department parking lot, but he continued to drive onto Park Street to create distance between himself and the other vehicle.

The cars continued onto University Avenue and eventually arrived at Busey and Park where they both exited the vehicles. UPD said the woman was armed with a baseball bat and the male passenger approached the male driver.

According to UPD the male driver said that the male passenger had a hand under his shirt, and that he believed the other man was armed with a weapon. The male driver is a legal concealed carry holder. He drew his gun and fired several rounds, shooting the male passenger.

The male driver called 911 and the male passenger was transported to a hospital where he underwent surgery. As of Saturday night, UPD said he was in the intensive care unit.

The Urbana Police Department said this is an ongoing investigation. Currently, no arrests have been made.
