WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday named incendiary Republican U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz to be his nominee for attorney general, selecting an ally who has faced Justice Department scrutiny to run the agency. "Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans' badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department," Trump said in a statement announcing the selection, which would be subject to confirmation by the Republican-majority Senate. The choice of a 42-year-old congressman who has never worked in the Justice Department or as a prosecutor at any level of government was the latest in a wave of Trump nominations of candidates with scant experience.

New Mexico's top elections regulator said Tuesday that she has been the target of harassing and threatening comments on social media after affirming President-elect Donald Trump's national election victory in an attempt to halt conspiracy theories. New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver shared her concerns as she briefed a legislative panel about administration of the general election and progress toward certifying the vote tally amid a surge in same-day voter registration. "I am currently experiencing threats, harassment — from even some members of this committee — online," said Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat who has been subject repeatedly to threats in the past.

BERLIN (Reuters) -Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday appealed to parties to pass measures such as raising child benefits and lifting tax thresholds before a February snap election, stressing that Germans did not need to choose between security and prosperity. Scholz was addressing parliament in political leaders' first public head-to-head since the collapse of the chancellor's ruling coalition last week forced the country into a snap election that will likely take place in February. With parties already in election mode, Scholz is fighting an uphill battle to keep his job, with polls showing the conservative opposition led by Friedrich Merz set to gain power.
