A Davenport house is a total loss after a fire about 3:45 p.m. Saturday on the 1100 block of West 59th Street.

Fire crews responded Saturday afternoon to smoke coming from the back of the house. Heavy fire took over the second story. Crews found heavy smoke throughout the house.

Crews say the fire was in an upstairs bedroom, where the blaze was extinguished. Two dogs made it out safely.

The Red Cross is helping the family that was displaced. One occupant suffered minor smoke inhalation and was assessed on the scene before being transported to MercyOne Genesis East Medical Center by Medic EMS of Scott County.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The U.S. Justice Department is demanding records related to the shooting of an Illinois woman who was killed in her home by a sheriff's deputy as it investigates how local authorities treat Black residents and people with behavioral disabilities. The government made a list of demands in dozens of categories in a letter to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, dated Thursday. "The Sheriff's Office, along with involved county agencies, has engaged in discussions and pledged full cooperation with the Department of Justice in its review," Sheriff Paula Crouch said Friday.

Donald Trump's choice of Matt Gaetz to be attorney general has many Justice Department employees reeling, worried not only about their own jobs but the future of the agency that the Trump loyalist has railed against. The president-elect's pick of the Florida Republican sent a shock throughout the Cabinet department, considering Gaetz's lack of experience in law enforcement and the fact that he was once the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation. The names of well-regarded veteran lawyers had circulated as possible contenders for the job, but Gaetz's selection was broadly interpreted as an indication of the premium that Trump places on personal loyalty and Trump's desire to have a disruptor lead a department that for years investigated and ultimately indicted him.
