Over 70% of voters unhappy with how 'things are going' in US, initial exit poll data shows

Initial exit polling results shared by CNN Tuesday evening show nearly three-fourth of voters are unhappy with the state of the U.S.

CNN shared the data around 5:00 p.m. ET Tuesday, one hour before the first polls closed. The network said it asked Americans how they are "feeling about the way things are going" in the country.

A total of 72% of respondents indicated they feel negatively, with 43% answering "dissatisfied" and 29% saying "angry." Meanwhile, 19% told CNN they are "satisfied" and 7% responded "enthusiastic."

CNN anchor Chris Wallace remarked after the network showed the initial results that, based on the data, it would be "a miracle" for Vice President Kamala Harris to win the election.

"In conventional terms, it would be a miracle that Kamala Harris could win with that kind of headwind," Wallace said.

"If she is able to overcome those numbers and still win this election, then she has done a remarkable job of somehow separating herself that she's part of the solution, not part of the problem," he added.

Harris last month asserted that if she is elected, her presidency would not be a "continuation" of President Joe Biden's presidency. She told Fox News anchor Bret Baier at the time she represents "a new generation of leadership."

Separate initial exit polling data from CNN found 41% of voters approve of Biden's performance, while 58% disapprove.
