A national observance known as White Cane Safety Day is celebrated on October 15. This year the Panhandle Independent Living Center (PILC) in Amarillo hosted a walk and resource fair to help individuals overcome visual impairments by understanding you're not alone and services are available.

"We're going to give folks the opportunity to get out there to use a white cane to walk around find those obstacles," said Roger Rosales, White Cane walk participant.

The men and women who are participating in National White Cane Safety Day said that a walk at Ellwood Park symbolizes something with special meaning that they can overcome any challenge that comes their way.

"I started learning how to use it when I was in school," said Rosales. "I did feel a bigger sense of independence and I was able to travel independently around my school and my community."

The Panhandle Independent Living Center said there are not just people in Amarillo but in the Texas Panhandle and across the region who may be hesitant to come forward and seek services.

"I know it can be frustrating it can be an embarrassment to you but don't be afraid to step out there and take advantage of using those resources in the community," said Rosales.

"Roughly we have a little over 200 consumers that utilize PILC services for any age and all income levels," said Cherrie Miller, PILC, ILS coordinator.

Panhandle Independent Living Center encourages those who may be hesitant to come forward to understand there is strength in numbers and when it comes to being visually impaired don't view it as a negative view it as a challenge something that you can overcome.

The events hosted by the PILC were made possible thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
