Paddy Goes to Petra review: Bereaved Irish farmer finds peace amongst the Bedouin

R.Campbell2 hr ago
There are a lot of intriguing elements to this show. It's a solo piece about an Irish farmer, Paddy, on a multi-destination holiday with his wife in the Middle East. They fetch up in the Bedouin area of Petra, Jordan, a place described as where Asia, Africa and Europe meet. Paddy decides to stay on, pretending to have lost his passport. He dispatches Eilis to Cyprus where they are due to meet her sister Bríd and her husband Jack.

It is two years since their son Killian died by suicide, and they are travelling in order to avoid Christmas in Ireland. Paddy, in a state of avoidance and denial, is in crisis. Somehow, in Petra, the kind Bedouin men whom he meets appear to offer some sort of consolation. He stays on for a number of weeks, refusing to come home.
