Painting and ponies

LUZERNE – Downtown Luzerne had a little something for everyone Saturday during the 14th annual Fall Festival hosted by the Luzerne Merchants Association.

There were face-painting, a petting zoo and pony rides for the kids, clothes, purses, necklaces, knickknacks and other items on sale for adults, and a variety of food for everybody as people walked through the festival on Main Street.
A disc jockey set up an outdoor system blasting music that could be heard for a couple of blocks.
Mary Cherkauskas, of Ashley, was one of the many vendors set up under tents as she sold her Avon products.
This is her third year to participate, and she was happy the rain held off for the most of the day, unlike last year, when there were some rain showers, she said.
“There is a nice flow of people today, considering it’s not the best day,” Cherkauskas said.
Tupperware salesperson Jackie Rinehimer, of Wilkes-Barre, was happy to have the exposure of being at the festival to attract new clients and remind people that Tupperware is still around after 60 years.
She said she was getting some good leads. She occasionally sets up at other festivals.
For Luzerne resident Janice Louchs, the day is all about supporting the area.
“I like to support the community and special events,” she said as she carried a bag with her most recent purchases from a local consignment shop on Main Street.
Louchs was pleased to see there were more vendors and food companies set up this year than in the past three years she’s attended the outdoor event.
The festival continues from 12 to 6 p.m. today on Main Street in Luzerne.
