Panthers fire head coach Frank Reich 10 months after hiring him

C.Kim3 months ago
One month after Josh McDaniels was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders , the 2023 NFL season has claimed another head coaching victim: the Carolina Panthers have relived Frank Reich off their duties, the team announced on Monday.

“I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers,” team owner David Tepper said in a statement. “I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well.

“Effective immediately, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will serve as our interim head coach. Senior assistant Jim Caldwell will be a special advisor to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, who will take over play calling duties.”

Reich was hired by the Panthers earlier this offseason, and shortly thereafter equipped with the first overall draft pick. But despite the team adding highly-touted quarterback Bryce Young, the team has struggled this season: it has won just one game this year, and at 1-10 owns the worst record in football.

As a consequence, Reich has now been let go. This marks the second straight year that he was fired in-season; the Indianapolis Colts parted ways with him in November 2022.

The Panthers, meanwhile, have now also canned their coach during the season in back-to-back years.
