Pasadena Vice Mayor Steve Madison is set to host a District 6 town hall meeting focusing on the South Orange Grove neighborhood, addressing both its storied past and future challenges. The event, scheduled for September 25, at Westridge School, is planned to engage residents in discussions about local road safety and historical preservation.

The meeting is scheduled to feature presentations on the history of South Orange Grove Boulevard, as well as on Transportation Department's Local Road Safety Action Plan. The neighborhood is wrestling with significant traffic concerns.

South Orange Grove Boulevard, once known as "Millionaire's Row" for its grand estates, now carries 1,700 to 1,900 cars per hour during peak times.

The Boulevard sees approximately 26,000 car trips per day, creating challenges for pedestrians and cyclists.

The City's Transportation Department has developed a Local Roadway Safety Plan to address the associated issues. The plan aims to achieve zero fatalities by focusing on pedestrian and bicycle safety, vehicle speed, and signalized intersections.

Potential solutions being considered include upgrading traffic signal cabinets and installing detection systems along South Orange Grove Boulevard. A "road diet" that would reduce car lanes in favor of buffered bike lanes has been discussed, though it's not clear if this is a definite proposal.

Beyond traffic safety, the town hall will address the preservation of South Orange Grove's historic character. The neighborhood, laid out in 1874 as Pasadena's main avenue, faces challenges in maintaining its urban forest and protecting historic features.

The well-being of area's beloved trees is an important subject. Property owners are responsible for watering street trees, balancing water conservation efforts with the need to maintain the urban canopy.

The preservation of century-old bronze light poles, which have recently been targets of theft, highlights the ongoing struggle to protect the neighborhood's historic elements.

Vice Mayor Madison, who represents District 6 including West Pasadena neighborhoods above the Rose Bowl, regularly hosts town halls on district-specific issues. This meeting continues his practice of direct engagement with constituents on neighborhood-specific concerns.

The town hall offers an opportunity for community members to learn about both the historical significance of South Orange Grove and future plans for the area. It reflects the city's broader efforts to improve mobility options while preserving its rich heritage.
