Passenger in Tucson wreck that caused fire dies

A passenger in a car that crashed into a utility pole this week, causing a fire at a midtown apartment complex has died, police say.

Andrea Christine Wasson, 35, was riding in a maroon Chevrolet Equinox about 5:30 a.m. Thursday that was traveling south in the 1400 block of North Alvernon Way when it veered off the road and struck a wooden utility pole, Tucson police said in a news release.

The pole shifted from the impact, causing the attached power lines to arc. That started a fire on the roof of an apartment complex. Four apartments were damaged and three families were displaced by the blaze, the release said.

The unidentified 71-year-old driver who suffered serious injuries and Wasson, who was critically injured, were taken to the hospital. Police were told Friday that Wasson had died, the release said.

The cause of the crash still is being investigated, but police say speed appears to have been a factor.
