Play of the Game
What else? Zack Mills’ game-winning TD pass to Eric McCoo.
Player of the Game
Mills, entering the contest cold, went 5-of-8 for 54 yards on the final
series.
Rising to the Occasion
Bryant Johnson grabbed eight passes for 129 yards, including four in the
last series for Penn State.
Best Pass
NU’s Zak Kustok hit a streaking Simmons in stride on the 44-yard TD in the
second quarter.
Best Catch
Any of Johnson’s four on the game-winning series would qualify.
PSU corner Bruce Branch had a potential interception and long return bang
off his shoulder pads late in the second quarter.
Best Run
McCoo displayed great second- and third-effort on his 7-yard TD in the
second quarter.
Best Effort
Lion TB Larry Johnson broke at least four tackles during his 22-yard run in
the third quarter.
Best Hit
Branch forced a Simmons fumble deep in Lion territory after a 19-yard
reception. Safety Yaacov Yisreal recovered for PSU.
Worst Eyes
Belong to the officials who missed Branch signaling for a fair catch on a
punt, then taking off for 17 yards. Television replays clearly showed the PSU
returner waving his right arm before catching the ball.
Gone, but not
The Wildcats wear a patch with the initials RAW on their uniforms in memory
of Rashidi Wheeler, a senior safety who died while running summer conditioning
drills on campus. Wheeler’s No. 30 jersey number has been retired and his
locker is being preserved with a glass case surrounding his jersey and helmet.
Wheeler started 12 games in 2000 and registered 88 tackles (59 solo) and three
pass deflections.
He said it
“I’m gonna get in trouble with a good, stiff Bourbon, take a nap and then
start looking at Ohio State tapes.” – Paterno, when asked how he planned to
celebrate his milestone win.
Between the Lions
Penn State stopped Northwestern’s five-game home winning streak ... McCoo’s
the opening half for PSU this season ... McCoo’s second TD – the 7-yard run –
was the Lions’ first rushing score of 2001 ... Senneca’s 1-yard TD run was the
first rushing score of his career ... The Lions used WR Eddie Drummond as a
third back in the backfield on numerous occasions. Paterno said he wanted to
give the struggling player a jump-start ... Kustok surpassed the 1,000-yard
rushing mark for his career in the second quarter.
