(WHTM) — A law that enhances allergy safety in childcare environments was highlighted in Harrisburg Monday.

Pennsylvania lawmakers could adopt Elijah's law under House Bill 2082 , a bill that provides for the treatment and prevention of life-threatening allergic reactions in childcare centers.

Recent statistics from the Food Allergy Research and Education Fair show nearly 8% of children have food allergies. Advocates say Elijah's Law will give parents peace of mind.

"Mistakes can happen," said State Rep. Bridget Kosierowski (D-Lackawanna County). "So that's why it's really important for us today to understand how important it is to think about access to emergency care. When something like an anaphylactic reaction happens, it is important for our child care services providers to know how to use something like an EpiPen."

The bill was referred to the Health Committee in March.
