PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Phoenix woman is picking up the pieces after surviving a double shooting earlier this month .

The early morning hours of Nov. 8 are still a nightmare for Angelique Herrera, who was at her home in west Phoenix and saw someone outside her window.

"That's when I noticed it was my kid's dad, my ex-boyfriend," said Herrera.

Herrera thinks her ex-boyfriend, identified by police as 28-year-old Luis Lopez-Gutierrez, was trying to break into her home where she was with her current boyfriend just before Herrera got in her car to leave.

"Once I put it into drive to take off, I just heard a loud bang," she recalled.

Both Herrera and her boyfriend were shot, but they managed to drive away to safety while calling 911 for help. Meanwhile, Lopez-Gutierrez led police and troopers on a chase that ended in the Marana area.

"She didn't even have to say his name or anything. She just said, 'He shot me', and I already knew who it was," said Herrera's friend Rubi Lopez.

Lopez and Herrera have been friends for over a decade. Lopez started a GoFundMe after the shooting to help Herrera and her family.

"She's very driven ever since I've known her. She's really kind," said Lopez.

Herrera says after she was released from the hospital, she got a text from her landlord, the suspect's sister, telling her she had to move out. She's also unable to do her job as a delivery driver for Amazon while recovering.

Herrera says she never thought something like this would happen between her and her ex-boyfriend, but she wants to share her story in hopes that it could help someone else in a domestic violence situation.

"I would hope that other people get out sooner or speak up before it's too late," she said.

Herrera says she is working to get full custody of her two kids. Her current boyfriend, who was also shot, is still recovering from his injuries.
