PIAA Girls Volleyball: Trinity sweeps past Villa Joseph Marie, reaches quarterfinals
The Trinity girls volleyball team swept District 1 champion Villa Joseph Marie Tuesday in a PIAA Class 2A opener.
The Shamrocks (21-0), the District 3 gold medalist, recorded winning scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-14. With the victory, Trinity advances to Saturday's quarterfinals and draws District 6 runner-up Forest Hills, a 3-0 winner over Redbank Valley, at a site and time to be determined.
The Squirettes answered with a 25-20 third set, but with 25-19 and 25-23 game 1 and 2 wins, and a gritty 25-21 fourth set, Trinity earned the 3-1 victory Thursday.
Senior Jayda Gray led the Shamrock effort with 17 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Emily Wolfe and freshman Quinlin Bilodeau teamed for 40 assists while freshman Kennedy Flor fished out 20 digs. Wolfe, Kaitlin Magel and Mia Beckett added five kills each.
Trinity will appear in its second straight state quarterfinal. The 'Rocks acquired PIAA silver last fall, dropping a 3-1 decision to Philipsburg-Osceola.
