The PIAA released its enrollment classification figures Friday for high
school football, setting in motion the next step to creating the new
Northeastern Pennsylvania Football Conference for the 2000-2001 school year.

League officers from the Wyoming Valley Conference and Lackawanna League
are meeting Monday afternoon to discuss the proposed conference, but it is
uncertain whether a final vote will take place. WVC schools voted 12-4 in
favor to pursue a joint conference earlier this season. The Lackawanna League
voted 17-2 in favor.
Under the PIAA enrollment figures, the schools will be classified as
follows:

Class 4A: Abington Heights, Delaware Valley, Hazleton Area, Scranton,
Wyoming Valley West and Williamsport. (Pottsville, a WVC 4A team this season,
has decided to drop out of the proposed league).

Class 3A: Berwick, Coughlin, Crestwood, Dallas, Honesdale, Lake-Lehman,
North Pocono, Pittston Area, Tunkhannock and Wyoming Area.

Class 2A: Carbondale, Dunmore, GAR, Hanover Area, Lakeland, Meyers,
Mid-Valley, Montrose, Nanticoke, Scranton Prep, Valley View and Western Wayne.

Class A: Bishop Hafey, Bishop Hoban, Bishop O’Hara, Bishop O’Reilly,
Lackawanna Trail, Northwest, Old Forge, Riverside and Susquehanna.

Class A schools have up to 186 boys, 2A (187-302), 3A (303-450) and 4A (451
and above).
