"They were having their way in the passing game and I really thought they were going to throw," said Fruzzetti. "This is a really good win for the kids."

Max Arnold led the Panthers in rushing and the lefty tailback took a handoff from Jack Horvath before flipping it to Tim Durocher for a 2-point conversion in the second quarter, tying the game at 14. Durocher excelled in the second game of his second season as a starter, including a deft head fake to spring Frechette wide open on a leak out for the 10-yard touchdown in the fourth.

After the Panthers recovered a kickoff that was somewhere between an onsides attempt and a squib, Durocher hit Robbie Anzalone down the sideline for a 40-yard gain to set up Arnold's 5-yard rushing touchdown.

"We really emptied the tank tonight on trick plays and 2-point conversions," Fruzzetti said. "We're going to have to go to drawing board and cook some more up now. Everything we worked on in practice we used, the plays we called, they executed."

Masconomet 21, Billerica 19 — The Chieftains (2-0) were clinging to a 21-19 lead in the final minutes when the visiting Indians (0-1) started to march across midfield. Billerica completed a pass across the sticks on fourth-and-11, but Chieftains junior linebacker Jack Fabiano came flying in to punch the ball away and seal the upset win.

"We kept preaching all week, that it wasn't about the scoreboard at the end of the game," said Masconomet coach Pat Sheehan.

"This was a litmus test for our ability to compete with championship level program. For us to go toe-to-toe over four straight quarters against an outstanding program, is absolutely amazing, and a testament to how hard our team works and believes in themselves."

Arbri Halilaj broke a 65-yard touchdown on a jet sweep to get the Chieftains on the board and Cal Wideman caught a pair of 25-yard receiving touchdowns from Drew Gustafson. Led by Cash Kornusky and Lucas Magnifico, the defensive line held up against Billerica's tough front, allowing the Chieftains to maintain their lead.

Walpole 21, Foxborough 18 — The No. 20 Wolves (1-1) bounced back from their blowout loss to defending D2 champion King Philip with a narrow win over the defending D5 state champion Warriors (0-2) despite a few miscues on special teams.

Wolves senior quarterback Noah Mackenzie completed 14 of 26 passes for 226 yards and totaled three touchdowns plus a 2-point conversion. His top target was Matt St. Cyr (7 receptions, 115 yards) and Brayden Mattera rushed for 75 of Walpole's 165 rushing yards.

"That's stuff we can't do," Walpole coach Chris Sullivan said about special teams miscues and a few fumbles.
