Sep. 20—Amy Suman, who recently led the Laguna Department of Education, was named the Pojoaque Valley School District's new superintendent Thursday following a unanimous vote from the school board.

She will officially step into the role Tuesday, the district said in a news release, bringing years of experience in educational leadership and student advocacy to a district that includes the communities of Nambé, Jaconita, Tesuque, El Rancho, Arroyo Seco, Cundiyó and San Ildefonso.

"We are excited to have Amy lead the school district for the foreseeable future. Her vision for inclusive, Whole-Child development and her commitment to engaging both teachers and students will help create lifelong learners and continue to improve our district," board President Adam Muller said in a statement.

At the Laguna Department of Education in Laguna Pueblo, Suman and her team developed the nation's first Indigenous curriculum and designed an interagency emergency communications and safety plan.

"Her leadership philosophy is grounded in community investment and the belief that strong student support systems not only promote academic achievement but also improve long-term health and quality of life," the news release states.

Suman earned her master's degree from Pennsylvania Western University and is completing her doctorate in educational administration and psychology at the University of the Southwest.
