Pojoaque Valley School News:

The Pojoaque Valley School District's Board of Education has unanimously voted to appoint Amy Suma as the district's new superintendent.

Suma will officially assume her new role Tuesday, Sept. 24, bringing her extensive experience in educational leadership, curriculum development and student advocacy to the Pojoaque Valley community.

Suma, a native of Alexandria, Va., holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a minor in English from the University of New Mexico, along with a post-Bachelor's certification in Physical Education. She earned her master's degree from Pennsylvania Western University and is completing her doctorate in Educational Administration and Psychology at the University of the Southwest.

Over the course of her career, Suma has taught physical education, nutrition and health in Albuquerque, and worked as an English and Reading Intervention teacher in Albuquerque Charter Schools. Most recently she served as superintendent of the Laguna Department of Education, where she and her team developed the nation's first Indigenous Curriculum, designed an inter-agency emergency communications and safety plan, and initiated a multi-district Career and College Fair.

In her new role as superintendent of the Pojoaque Valley School District, Suma will continue her focus on transformational leadership, teacher voice and student engagement. A strong advocate for special education, gifted programs and culturally-affirmative curricula, Suma is committed to fostering a learning environment where every student can thrive. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in community investment and the belief that strong student support systems not only promote academic achievement but also improve long-term health and quality of life.

"We are excited to have Amy lead the school district for the foreseeable future," President Adam E. Muller said. "Her vision for inclusive, Whole-Child development and her commitment to engaging both teachers and students will help create lifelong learners and continue to improve our district."
